The video is a calendula-infusion we’re making using the ‘Folk Method’. Which is a traditional approach to creating herbal oil infusions, rooted in intuition and simple observation rather than precise measurements. It’s the art of slow, patient medicine-making.

For dried herbs, loosely place enough herb to fill a jar to almost the top (leave about 1 inch below the lid). Cover the herbs with an organic carrier oil, such as olive or almond, until they are completely submerged (keep the 1 inch space at the top). Cover the jar with a lid and place on a warm, sunny windowsill for 2 to 6 weeks, creating a gentle, solar-infused oil. The mixture is shaken daily.

If you’re using fresh herbs, follow the same steps as above but infuse for a much shorter period—often just 1 to 3 days—and check daily for any signs of cloudiness, bubbling, or off-odors, which indicate spoilage. Strain the oil immediately once the desired strength is reached.

This slow maceration allows the oil to gradually absorb the fat-soluble properties of the herbs. The process is deemed complete when the oil has taken on the plant’s scent and color. Finally, the mixture is strained through cloth, squeezing out every last drop of the finished herbal oil, which is then stored for use in salves and balms. Don’t forget to label it with the name of the herb and the contents and date.

3. The Fear of Failure and Self-Worth

For many Year 12 students, academic performance becomes tangled with self-esteem.

How to Re-frame Your Own Self-Worth

This is about changing your internal dialogue and building an identity that is bigger than your exam results.

1. Practice “And” Statements

Your self-talk might sound like: “I'm stressed about this exam and that means I'm going to fail.”
Reframe it to: “I'm really stressed about this exam and that is a normal reaction to a big challenge. And I have handled tough things before. And my worth as a person remains the same.”

Why it works: It acknowledges the feeling without letting it define your entire reality. It allows multiple truths to coexist.

2. Create an “Evidence Log” or “Done List”

Instead of a “To-Do List” that never ends, keep a “Done List”. At the end of each day, write down 3-5 things you accomplished, no matter how small.

“Reviewed Chapter 5.”
“Did 10 practice questions.”
“Took a proper break to recharge.”

Why it works: It provides tangible proof of your effort and progress, combating the feeling of "I'm not doing enough" or "I'm useless."

3. Define Your “Unshakeable Core”

Get a piece of paper and write down your values and qualities that have nothing to do with school. Answer: What makes you a good friend? What do you care about? What are you passionate about?

Why it works: This is a physical reminder that you are a multi-dimensional person. Your ATAR is a number; it is not your character, your sense of humour, or your capacity for friendship.

4. Use a “Worry Buster”

When the thought “If I fail, I am a failure” arises, challenge it with questions.

Why it works: It moves you from catastrophic, emotional thinking to practical, problem-solving thinking.

Year 12 Exam Stress - PART TWO

Following on from our post yesterday on analysing Year 12 exam stress. Another aspect of year 12 exams that adds pressure to the situation is...

2. The Volume and Difficulty of Content
Year 12 syllabuses are vast. Students are expected to have a deep understanding of complex concepts across multiple subjects, all of which culminate in a final exam.

This creates the “Cram” Problem. It's virtually impossible to cram two years of learning into a few weeks. The sheer volume can feel overwhelming and unmanageable, leading to panic and a feeling of being constantly behind.

If cramming is the only option for one reason or another, there is another way!

An effective alternative to cramming is a strategic approach called Spaced Repetition and Active Recall, combined with good planning. It's less about studying more and more about studying smarter.

This method leverages the way your brain actually learns and retains information.

Step 1: Plan It Out (The Foundation)
At the start of each week or topic, create a study schedule. The 5-Day Study Plan (for one topic):

Day 1 (Class notes): Review notes taken throughout the year on this subject (review is crucial).
Day 2 (Recall): Without looking at your notes, try to write down everything you remember from Day 1 (a mind map, key concepts, formulas). Then check your notes and fill in the gaps.
Day 4 (Review): Review the material again. Use flashcards or do a few practice problems.
Day 7 (Test): Do a practice question or teach the concept to someone (or your pet!) from memory.
Day 8+ (Later Review): Revisit the topic briefly before a major test.

In a nutshell: Shift your mindset from “I need to learn all this now” to “I need to review this regularly, so I never forget it”. It feels slower at first, but it leads to mastery with far less stress and far better results.

1. The "ATAR is Everything" Pressure

This is the engine of stress. The Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) is mostly presented as the sole gateway to university and a prestigious career.

University Entry: Students are told for years that their ATAR score is the key to getting into their desired course. A few marks can be the difference between getting into a dream course or missing out, which feels like a life-altering consequence.

Parental & Family Expectations: There can be immense pressure, whether spoken or unspoken, from families who want their child to succeed, get into a prestigious course, or fulfil a family legacy or expectation.

School Reputation: Schools are often ranked and compared based on their academic results, which can create an environment where the school's reputation feels like it's resting on the students' shoulders.

You’re watching us (me filming though) offloading some of the bales of mulch we just finished bailing which will be used on garden beds for the medicinal herbs that will go into our remedies.

We create mulch to use as a nutritive protective layer for the soil. The process involves Jahdi slashing the spare paddock when the grass is high and dry, then bailing it.

We simply layer the new mulch on top of the old stuff. I love making mulch! It’s a physically and spiritually rewarding ritual that makes our farm’s ecology very happy, which is evident in the healthy herbs we harvest.

Reishi mushrooms work as adaptogens by influencing the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, which governs the body’s stress response and dictates cortisol release.

It does this via the mushroom’s secondary metabolites or phytochemicals (plant chemicals) which interact with existing hormone receptors in the body.

The key medicinal metabolites of reishi are triterpenes and polysaccharides, and I’ll explain how we extract them at our on-farm laboratory...
We run an alcohol extraction to isolate the calming, stress-reducing (anxiolytic) properties of the mushroom which are found in specific triterpenes.
We also run a water extraction to isolate the immune-boosting (immunomodulatory) compounds which are found in specific polysaccharides.
In summary, we undertake a dual-extraction process (alcohol and water) to produce our Reishi Remedy from organic reishi mushrooms grown by us (not a third-party farm).

Our Reishi Remedy is a herbal medicine formulated with the potency needed to lower your blood cortisol levels.

Our purple garlic [pictured] is close to harvest, and I can’t wait to pull it out. There’s nothing better than eating fresh, organic produce knowing that it does no harm to the magical soil ecosystem it’s growing in.

We don’t just grow mushrooms indoors either, we grow Turkey Tail and Shiitake mushrooms outside along with a few other ‘escapee’ varieties that pop up in the spent composte we spread around our garden.

So much love gets poured into what we do, and it’s our priority to work in harmony with our pristine environment. Which is why we don’t use chemicals or synthetic inputs anywhere on the property.

I love taking photos to document some of the magnificent mushrooms that appear in our fruiting room (where the mushrooms grow) and around our property among the trees. This beauty pictured is a Turkey tail mushroom or Trametes versicolor growing on wood under our big old oak in the house yard.

It is such an interesting fungus to look at and a medicinal powerhouse too.

Turkey Tail is a common polypore mushroom found throughout the world where it grows in nature on decaying wood. It eventually turns fallen trees and branches on the forest floor into humus.

FYI: “Humus is a dark, organic material that forms in soil when plant and animal matter decays. It’s a complex mixture of compounds rich in nutrients that helps soil retain moisture. Humus is one of the most abundant forms of organic matter on the earth’s surface”.

Good for the environment and good for us.

The cooler weather has arrived and so too have the King Trumpet mushrooms (or King Oysters as they’re often called). The genus and species of this tasty variety is Pleurotus eryngii, whereas the standard oyster mushroom is a Pleurotus ostreatus. The second name is the ‘species’, so technically, King Trumpets are not an oyster!

Our organic King Trumpet mushrooms are a versatile large culinary variety that have a sweet nutty flavour and firm meaty texture. They are ideal for grilling, sauteing, roasting and any other cooking application that puts them at the centre of the plate.

Did you know the King Trumpet mushroom: is low in calories; reduces ‘bad’ cholesterol; promotes cardiovascular health; helps with weight loss - being protein-rich and low in calories; provides a significant source of biotin, niacin, and riboflavin. These B vitamins play a role in the metabolism of food and contribute to the immune system. And mushrooms are the ONLY produce that contain Vitamin D.

To cook King Trumpets simply slice or tear them to your desired thickness, add them to a skillet with oil over medium heat, season (with salt, pepper, herbs etc.), cook for 10-15 minutes and/or longer until golden brown and remove from the heat. Flashback Friday: Maddrake Mushroom Farm began in 2013 at Missabotti as Glory Ridge Plantation, a certified organic farm. It was here Jahdi grew certified organic fruits (infamously delicious bananas and mangos) and vegetables. Not long after he followed a lifelong passion for mushrooms and began growing them commercially under the moniker ‘Missabotti Mushrooms’.

These mushrooms landed in the Nambucca Valley’s first organic food box in 2017, which later evolved into what you might know as the @northarmfarms_nv veggie boxes.

Jahdi’s passion for growing mushrooms outgrew the Glory Ridge Plantation and after a stint in the Blue Mountains growing mushrooms and supplying the @bmfoodcoop (Blue Mountains Food Coop), he moved to the hinterland of Bowraville where he created a purpose-built mushroom growing facility.

Today, the farm is also our home, and it’s where the mushroom mastery continues at pace growing a wide variety of edible medicinal mushrooms that go into our signature potent remedies and a wide variety of culinary mushrooms.
